Retro arcade games are always the best, I especially don’t tolerate simple games, I prefer games that add a bit of challenge, in my opinion a game developer has wasted their time if they design a game that can easily be beaten in less than an hour. For someone who regularly games they are often much faster at beating games, perhaps it depends on the genre of gaming, I personally enjoy a good strategy or puzzle game here and there.
The story of K.O.L.M is about a robot who has lost all his pieces, the game itself reminds me very much of Upgrade Complete. In Upgrade Complete you have to build everything from the ground up, preloader, graphics etc.. However in my opinion KOLM definitely delivers in all aspects of simplicity, creativity, challenge and design, it has been a while since I have personally played a broswer game this semi-challenging.
KOLM starts off with just his robotic head, he must move forward in search for his feet but it doesn’t stop there. Throughout the game KOLM will encounter some pretty tough arcade style enemies, some of levels reminded me of the game Galaga. As I stated earlier Kolm has a very classy touch, which is probably the main reason I enjoy the game, but aside from all that it will keep you going in circles (or rather should I say squares) trying to find all the missing pieces and puzzles that make this game effortlessly challenging.
The developer has now created KOLMIAM, here is the KOLMIAM Walkthrough if you would like to take a sneak peak at the latest installment/sequel for the game. Enjoy!
K.O.L.M Guide (Part 1)
The first part is very basic, follow the white portals. The first part we encounter is our leg modules, press X to continue. KOLM will now be able to move more freely and faster. A few rooms later we will find our optics, yay! Now everything is more visible. Go to the right after collecting your vision (its the only way you can go without your springs). Now we have found our leg springs, press X to continue, use the “Z” key on your keyboard to jump, we need to backtrack. Go to the room where we found KOLMS optics, enter the higher left portal. Keep traveling to your left through the open portals. Soon you should end up in a room with a blue key, go grab it while jumping over the enemies and spikes. We can use the “X” key to blast down blue portals and enemies. Backtrack all the way to the room where we found KOLMS optics, this time enter the higher right door and follow the open portals. When you get to the tall narrow room blast down the blue portal using the X key, enter the room, you should now see an area with moving platforms and spikes, here we will find KOLMS compression unit, press the down arrow to glide back underneath narrow spaces. Return back to the room where we found KOLMS optics, this time enter the lower right door. Keep following the blue portals, blasting them with your plasma cannon, don’t forget to collect metal plates along the way. Soon you should make it to a room with a green background, enter the lower bottom portal. The next room should have water, but Kolm can’t swim yet, so enter the lower left blue portal. Upon entering the next room follow the lower left portal once again. Finally we will enter a room with spikes, avoid them by jumping in between on safe areas, in this room we will find KOLMS Dash Pads. Use the dash pads to clear large gaps, to do this hit your left or right arrow keys (depending on which direction you want to go) and press+HOLD Z as you jump.
You should enter in the room where we were just previously at, climb your way up to the higher right portal. KOLM still can’t swim, so jump from platform to platform avoiding the enemies to the upper left portal. Once we get to the other room, enter the upper right hand portal. Follow the portals until we get to a room with a row of spikes, we will clear them by using KOLMS double dash feature: tap+tap+Hold Down Z. Now we have found his waterproofing part, KOLM will now be capable of surviving in water. Head back to the level containing the water (where we previously were.) Follow the blue portals, a couple of rooms later we will find the slidepack, now we will be able to crouch and slide. Go back to the green room with the water, this time enter the lower left blue portal. Now when we enter the new room enter the lower right portal.
Use KOLMS slidepack to crouch and glide. Down arrow+Right or Left Arrow Keys. At last we should be in a strange room with clear looking blocks that fall as you step on them, just below you will find the boss robot, avoid his shots and kill him using your plasma gun to earn the jetpack (double jump). Follow the room out using the lower right portal. Collect the metal piece in the room(over to the lower right, use your slidepack) Jump on the jet-stream to reach the upper left blue portal. Keep following the portals up until you reach the long narrow black room with the jet-stream. Jump up there and allow the jet-stream to carry you upward: press Z + Hold Z (a little combo) it may take you a couple of tries in order to get high enough, climb and follow the portal out. You should enter a rather familiar room, look for the metal piece and collect it then follow the upper left portal out. You should now be in a room with water and purple portals, climb you way to the top to reach the highest right blue portal. In the next room collect the metal piece (use the slidepack to get it.) Keep following the portals until you reach the room with 3 portals (where we originally collected KOLMS optics) enter the upper right white portal. Finally we should be in a room with a purple key, use our jetpack to climb and get it, we will now be able to break down purple portals! After getting the purple key go back to the room with the moving platforms (where we found our compression unit) keep going left to get there, here we will get that metal piece. This will cover the first half of our game.
Kolm Guide (Part 2)
Return back to the room where we originally got KOLM’s optics, this time take the upper left portal, collect the metal piece if you have yet to get it. Great, keep following the portals until we get to the room with water, now go underwater and find the purple portal to the lower left and follow the purple portal through in the same direction. We have at last reached the red rooms in Kolm, keep following the purple portals in the upper left. Soon we will come to our next part called the “Hydravitor” after collecting that begin to go backwards 3 rooms, we should come back to a room with 3 portals, this time enter the lower left portal. Keep following the portals, you should reach a narrow red room with water, enter the lower right portal, keep following the portals, we should meet the second boss, now we will get the Jetpack Upgrade (triple jump) after that face the next robot, here we will get the Plasma Cannon Level 3 (ability to open yellow portals) finally beat the third robot and we will get Hypershield (Invincibility). Enemies will no longer hurt us, follow the exit out through the lower right portal. You should soon come to a room with a bunch of yellow portals guarding a piece, break it then collect the Core Damaged Facility Collapsed, you will have to exit immediately. Keep following the portals out until we get to the long black narrow room that says “escape” start climbing up that and continue to escape, congratulations you have beat the game!
Kolm is perhaps one of the most creative and ingenious strategy games to date. The game is about a little robot who has lost everything: his vision, legs and springs to jump, now it’s up to him to travel through various rooms to collect everything he has lost. The game starts off as a blur to begin with, nearly impossible to see anything, to start off you can shuffle you way around using the arrow keys, head over to the right. You can also Download KOLM for offline play or use it on your site or blog.

the room with the 3 ‘robots’ that attack you is super hard!!!
how do you kill them?? or clear the room??
nevermind, i got it
took me a while though
How do you even get up there!?
How did you do it? I’m stuck on it as well.
Keep holding the jump button after jumping, and your jetpack stays longer because of the jetstream.
What’s the phrase at the end? I know it’s “It’s kind of like -”. What’s the last word?
“It’s kind of like metroid” – but i didnt payed metroid((
It’s quite fun. It’s a lot like K.O.L.M., but longer… and it came first.
Someone help me, I’m stuck at the part with the other robot who looks like you but with a white body and purple legs. I have no idea what to do.
Just keep shooting him. If he kills you, you just start over at the door but the damage you have done still counts. So just go back and shoot him some more.
Where is the double jump?!? I Can’t find it ANYWHERE
It’s in the lower of the three groups of rooms.
Beat the white robot in green area and you will get it.
P.S. if you don’t take the damaged core (You need to kill the three robots to reach that room) in red area and go to exit directly, you will have bad ending. The little robot will be stuck in camera 50 forever, you can even saw it is frozen in the area that you get the slide part.(The area have HOPE written in the walls.)
But if you take the damaged core, you will only have three minutes to run the the exit, the beginning area. If you want to get all pieces of characters, get them first before you touch the damaged core..
You get the double jump after the first boss…The guy that looks like you…
I got all the letters and it said I had 100% of the items. Then, when I got to the end, the phrase only said:
“It’s -ind of like Metroid”
..With the first ‘k’ missing even though I found both ks.
Then, at the very end, it said I only completed 97%.
I have a feeling it has to do with the silver ball in the room at the bottom of the red part. I can’t figure out how to get it because there are horizontal yellow lines which I can’t shot because I can only hit the vertical ones.
Does anyone know what the deal with that is or why I only completed 97%?
You can shot upward by pressing up + X……..
Finally beat the game… and the last bit is nerve-wracking. Btw, you can use your plasma cannon to shoot more than doors. Hope that helps.
I know, because of all the nerve-racking, i almost had a spasm
who many worlds are there and what are all powers
where do i get the yeallow cannon
in the last world the second boss
What is the point of the letters that you find all over the place? I beat the game without ever using them, and I also only got 96 % of the technology…
In the last room before you leave the facility, if you look below the platform you’re walking on, you’ll see a notice that says, “Thanks for playing,” and then has a set of boxes. The letters that you collect while playing the game will be filled into the boxes, and in order to get 100% completion, you must get all the letters. If you get all of the letters, the final message says, “It’s kind of like metriod.”
To explain, the original metriod was almost exactly like this game in terms of game play. It was a plat-former that involved getting progressively stronger weapons to fight progressively harder enemies, gaining power ups as you went through the game. It even had an ending sequence where, after beating the final boss, you had to run back to the game’s starting point while a timer counted down.
Yeah I noticed that too but I din’t get all of the letters so i thought it was just spelling out the name of the person that made this game. By the way this game was awesome. And at the end when Mother kept repeating, “You’re right.” and “You killed me.” gave me the chills.
so what im trying to figure out is the story…. the boy killed the mom, dad, and brother, and then the moms ghost hates him and makes him re live it as a robot? obviously that isnt it, anyone else got ideas?
As far as i know, he was abused or something, and wanted revenge? Then he gets revenge, and his mom is angry as a ghost.
from what i understand, the mother is blaming the child (robot) for dad’s death, and hates him for it, the reference to brothers is when he thinks he is just a robot instead of a soul in a robot, and thinks the little pest robots are manufactured as his brothers. from the dialog at the end the factory is where they died and their souls could not pass on.
No guys, that’s not it: that same robot thing pretending to be the mother killed his family but it was KOLM that unknowingly allowed it to happen. It probably came to him as an opportunity to get away from his hateful mother. Then he followed the evil robot’s instructions and accidentally destroyed the house. He was probably going to warn his parents. It killed his family but not him. That’s how he got damaged. Remember It said “I REMEMBER this from LAST TIME” and “This is essential to our PLAN”? She wanted to destroy him once and for all and make sure he didnt come back. Don’t ask me why, I’m not a demonic force of destruction. KOLM probably stayed as a ghost because of his soul’s guilt, and found a robot and possessed it. The evil robot impersonated KOLM’s mother to manipulate him. The “brothers” remark meant that he thought he was a robot, and didn’t remember anything about his past until he was reminded of it. Then he realized it was happening again and knew he had to escape this time. If you won the game, congrats, you saved KOLM from dying again.
wow thats a really good perspective. You know, i was wondering about what the story was too and that pretty much sums it al up . Emrakul had a good story too.
i didnt get it all, i didnt see why you say “brothers” and when i was done, she said something that she owned me, or she didnt say owned, but something like that.
i fell through the screen
Yo, I’m stuck in room with triple jump. I went off into one of the indented areas and I can’t get up to collect the upgrade / fight bosses. HALP!!!
You mean where there are the gold barriers all around? Just aim up and shot.
Whewf. Just finished the game, only had to look at vid once. That ending with the timer freaked the crap outta me, my heart’s still racing a little….
I feel ya.
the timer isn’t worth being there. i took a five minute rest, came bak, and still beat it
hey im stuck on where the robot gets the underwater thing i cant jump over the spikes, can anyone help???
you need the rush jump move to jump over the spikes?
I think K.O.L.M. means “Kind of like Metroid.”.
P.S.(Post script) I didn’t finish the game.
;(
IT’S KIND OF FAKE METROID
this is the secret sentence
correction xD
I really suck at games…
But what’s good is that I get to die as many times as I want, yeah!
73 deaths and it took me nearly an hour, lol.
But fun game! ^^
i beat it! yay! the end part when it is shaking makes it so much harder!
1second left on the clock, OMG
Awesomeness! Escaped with 9 seconds left to spare O.O
It’s sort of funny that I didn’t realize that KOLM stood for the end game message until you said “KOLM is Kind of like Metroid”
Great game, and everyone needs to play #2. It’s not quite as hard, but it has an interesting storyline.
